Tai Chi

health training that concentrates on relieving the physical effects of stress on the body and mind

For those focused on Tai Chi's martial application, good physical fitness is an important step towards effective self-defense.

Meditation - The focus and calmness cultivated by the meditative aspect of Tai Chi is seen as necessary in maintaining optimum health (in the sense of relieving stress and maintaining homeostasis) and in application of the form as a soft style martial art.

Martial Art - The ability to use Tai Chi as a form of self-defense in combat is the test of a student's understanding of the art. Tai Chi is the study of appropriate change in response to outside forces, the study of yielding and "sticking" to an incoming attack rather than attempting to meet it with opposing force. The use of Tai Chi as a martial art is quite challenging and requires a great deal of training.

The Shaolin Academy of Kung Fu doesn't just teach forms. We believe in teaching out Tai Chi in the traditional way. While we teach a combination of contemporary and traditional Tai Chi, we ensure that we focus on Health, Meditation, & Martial Arts. It is in exploring Tai Chi at all levels that our students will truly understand the benefits of Tai Chi. When individuals only learn the Yang Style 24 Step Form exclusively, I tell them they are learning a nice meditative dance. That’s not to take away from the benefits they are receiving, but it is to emphasis that there is so much more depth to Tai Chi than just learning a form and just getting the initial benefits of stress relief.

At The Shaolin Academy of Kung Fu, you will learn:

Open Hand Forms (8, 16, 24, 40, 48, 88, 108 Yang Family Style)
Straight Sword Forms
Fan Forms
Qi Gong
Meditation
Proper Breathing
Push Hands
Fa Jing
Applications

We initially instruct our students in Yang Family Style Tai Chi, but we will also cover Chen, Wu/Hao, Wu, and Sun Styles.
