Tai Chi

Tai Chi's health training concentrates on relieving the physical effects of stress on the body and mind.

At Dao Concepts, we don't just teach forms. We believe in teaching out Tai Chi in the traditional way. While we teach a combination of contemporary and traditional Tai Chi, we ensure that we focus on Health, Meditation, & Martial Arts. It is in exploring Tai Chi at all levels that our students will truly understand the benefits of Tai Chi.  Our lineage comes through our Grand Master, SiGung Norman Smith, who is the head instructor and owner of Northern Shaolin Academy.  SiGung Norman has been training and teaching martial arts for over 50.  Through his lineage we are able to offer a rich comprehensive program that is second to none.  When individuals only learn Yang Style contemporary forms without understanding the traditional aspects of what they are learning, I tell them they are learning a nice meditative dance. That’s not to take away from the benefits they are receiving, but it is to emphasis that there is so much more depth to Tai Chi than just learning a form and just getting the initial benefits of stress relief.  For those focused on Tai Chi's martial application, good physical fitness is an important step towards effective self-defense.

Meditation - The focus and calmness cultivated by the meditative aspect of Tai Chi is seen as necessary in maintaining optimum health (in the sense of relieving stress and maintaining homeostasis) and in application of the form as a soft style martial art.

Martial Art - The ability to use Tai Chi as a form of self-defense in combat is the test of a student's understanding of the art. Tai Chi is the study of appropriate change in response to outside forces, the study of yielding and "sticking" to an incoming attack rather than attempting to meet it with opposing force. The use of Tai Chi as a martial art is quite challenging and requires a great deal of training.
